Traumatic brain injury (TBI), which occurs in 15–20% soldiers deployed in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, and stress, an inherent part of deployment, are individually associated with headache. To evaluate the effects of combat deployment and TBI on headache, this study compared attack type, severity, and frequency in 92 veterans with or without post-deployment TBI. Migraine impairs quality of life (QoL) and school functioning in children at levels similar to cancer and arthritis. The burden is most pronounced among those with chronic migraine.
