Who We Are
The American Headache Society® (AHS) is a professional membership society of healthcare providers dedicated to the study and treatment of headache and face pain. Whether you are a nurse practitioner, general practice physician, neurologist or headache specialist, the Society’s objectives are to promote the exchange of information and ideas concerning the causes and treatments of headache and related painful disorders.
Educating physicians, health professionals and the public while encouraging scientific research are the primary functions of AHS.

Access to the ever-expanding Members Only area of the AHS website, including the online Membership Directory; full-text articles from the journal Headache and Headache Currents; online CME; practice management tools; coding updates; legislative updates; access to valuable clinical and scientific information; research and fellowship opportunities, as well as comprehensive patient education resources.
You will have the opportunity to influence the direction of AHS and the field of headache medicine through participation on AHS Committees and Special Interest Sections. Members can join up to 17 Special Interest Sections whose objectives and programs are developed to enhance the scientific, educational, or patient care goals of the AHS. Sections are also invited to apply to present courses at the Annual Scientific Meeting and Scottsdale Headache Symposium.
$199 for the first year; $275 ($295 outside the USA) for renewals – Active membership is restricted to professionals holding one of the following degrees: MD, DO (or its equivalent as defined by the American Medical Association), a degree in Dentistry (DMD or DDS), a doctorate in pharmacy (PharmD) or a PhD in a health-related field, such as biochemistry, pharmacology or psychology. They should have an interest in headache, facial pain or the nature of pain in general. Applicants must include a copy of their current professional license to practice, medical certificate, or proof of degree.
Active members may vote and have the “privilege of the floor” at all member meetings of AHS at which matters are presented to the members for a vote and as members of its Committees. Active members may hold office and serve on Committees as designated by the President.
$125 per year – Associate membership is for nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, master level psychologists, physical therapists and physician’s assistants. Applicants must include a copy of their current license appropriate to their field.
Associate membership includes all the benefits of Active membership except voting privileges and election to the Board of Directors.
$99 per year – Trainee membership is for health professionals currently enrolled full time in graduate or postgraduate training in the fields of medicine, dentistry, psychology, or other bioscience. Medical students may be assigned Trainee status. These members will be reviewed annually to verify eligibility for Trainee member status. Applicants must include a letter of verification of active training from their institution.
Trainee membership includes all the benefits of Active membership except voting privileges or election to the Board of Directors.
The cost is $25 per year for a maximum of 2 years. Trainee membership is for health professionals currently enrolled full time in graduate or postgraduate training in the fields of medicine, dentistry, psychology, or other bioscience. Medical students may be assigned Trainee status. Applicants must include a letter of verification of active training from their institution. New Investigator & Trainee Trial membership includes all the benefits of Active membership except voting privileges or election to the Board of Directors. This membership includes online only access to the Headache journal.

Please note once your application and payment has been submitted, it will be forwarded for review and approval and you will be notified via email upon acceptance.
Fellow of the AHS (FAHS) is a position of honor and recognition and reflects acknowledgement by peers of high professional and scholarly achievement, integrity, outstanding professional maturity and superior competence. Some of these qualities are subjective and will be reflected by the standing of the applicant in the headache community. The deadlines for applications for FAHS status are March 15 and September 15 each year.
