The Research Committee is Advancing Headache Science and Supporting Emerging Researchers

The American Headache Society (AHS) is committed to advancing the science of headache medicine through innovation, collaboration, and support for the next generation of researchers. The Research Committee, co-chaired by Amynah Pradhan, PhD, FAHS, is helping lead the charge toward a more connected and innovative future for headache research.
“There’s still so much to explore in headache research. It’s really the wild west,” says Dr. Pradhan. “There are few researchers in this space, which means there’s a tremendous opportunity to grow, explore, and make meaningful contributions.” With so much room for growth, Dr. Pradhan sees collaboration and mentorship as key to advancing the field and inspiring the next generation of headache researchers.
Driving Research Through Collaboration
The Research Committee’s mission is to cultivate groundbreaking research that directly benefits patients living with headache disorders. The group works to strengthen connections across academia, industry, and funding organizations to identify ways to support research at every stage, from early ideas to clinical impact.
A key part of this effort includes the committee’s work with research grants and travel awards, which encourage trainees and early-career scientists to pursue headache research. Through these efforts, the committee aims to strengthen the foundation of headache research by creating more opportunities for investigators to launch and sustain their work. Each year, the committee refines its grant programs to attract new applicants and broaden participation, helping to build a strong and diverse pipeline of future investigators.
Dr. Pradhan notes that collaboration is central to their approach. “We’re finding ways to fund and formalize partnerships, whether through seed grants or joint opportunities with groups like the American Heart Association,” she says. “These collaborations help expand the scope of what’s possible in headache research.” By working together, investigators can share insights, resources, and data that accelerate discovery and lead to more meaningful breakthroughs for patients.
Supporting AHS’s Broader Mission
The Research Committee plays a vital role in fulfilling AHS’s mission by advancing scientific discovery that improves patient care. Their efforts help define research priorities for the field by working with organizations such as the International Headache Society and the National Institutes of Health to identify shared goals and set a clear path forward.
Recent committee discussions have focused on aligning global research priorities and developing strategies to bring new investigators into the field. The goal is to ensure that AHS remains a leader in setting the research agenda for headache medicine.
Looking Ahead
The Research Committee aims to continue expanding its programs, encouraging mentorship among trainees and established researchers alike, and strengthening cross-disciplinary connections. Dr. Pradhan emphasized the importance of involvement from AHS members, saying, “We want to see more members engaged in research, whether that means applying for grants, mentoring young investigators, or joining us in our committee work.”
Members interested in learning more about the Research Committee’s initiatives are encouraged to connect at the upcoming Scottsdale Headache Symposium. “This is an exciting time to be part of headache research,” says Dr. Pradhan. “Everyone benefits from good, high-quality science, and there is space for everyone to contribute.” The committee welcomes all members who share this enthusiasm to get involved, contribute their ideas, and help shape the future of headache research.
