This annual process, partnered with the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), connects highly trained applicants with accredited headache medicine programs, helping to grow and strengthen the field. Overall, the Match highlighted the growing global interest in headache medicine.
This year, a record 50 fellowship programs participated in the Match, offering a total of 65 certified positions. Of those, 52 positions were filled, resulting in an overall fill rate of 80 percent.
On the applicant side, 55 individuals certified their rank lists. Fifty-two of those applicants matched, yielding an impressive 94.5 percent match rate.
The 2025 Headache Medicine Match Results Statistics report is available on the NRMP website. More data will be shared from the NRMP in coming months.
Resources for Fellows on the AHS Website
For those exploring fellowship opportunities, the American Headache Society website offers a range of resources designed to guide applicants, fellows, and programs.
On the Fellowship Opportunities page, prospective fellows can review a directory of accredited programs across the United States and Canada. Each listing includes details about the institution, program leadership, and areas of emphasis, helping applicants identify programs that align with their clinical and research interests.
The website also provides application guidance and timelines, including links to the NRMP matching program, and resources for preparing rank lists. This information ensures that candidates are well informed about deadlines and requirements throughout the Match process.
Beyond logistics, AHS highlights the value of fellowship training by outlining how programs prepare physicians to become leaders in clinical care, research, and education. Fellows benefit from exposure to diverse patient populations, advanced diagnostic tools, and emerging therapies that shape the future of headache medicine.
Additionally, the site offers career development opportunities for trainees and fellows once they are part of the AHS community. These include mentorship programs, access to Special Interest Groups, and eligibility for travel scholarships to attend scientific meetings. Each of these resources is designed to support fellows during training and position them for success as they transition into independent practice.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 Headache Medicine Match underscores the vibrancy and momentum of the headache medicine community. While many programs filled their positions, some opportunities remain open for applicants interested in joining this growing subspecialty. These unfilled programs represent not only an opportunity for future applicants, but also a call to continue expanding training capacity to meet the increasing need for headache specialists.
