Upcoming AHS Headache & Migraine Research Grants

American Headache Society Research Grant Opportunities

The American Headache Society is dedicated to advancing headache science and supporting its members in their research efforts. Three upcoming grant opportunities provide investigators with funding to pursue projects that expand knowledge and improve patient care in headache and migraine.

AHS/AHA Innovative Project Award

The Innovative Project Award, offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA), supports high-risk, high-reward research at the intersection of cardiovascular disease and headache. This award is intended for studies that take bold approaches to exploring new mechanisms, connections, or treatments that may not yet be fully tested but could transform future care.

Important Dates:

  • Pre-proposal deadline: December 10, 2025
  • Invitations for full proposals: January 27, 2026
  • Full proposal deadline: March 5, 2026
  • Award notification: June 5, 2026
  • Project start date: July 1, 2026

AHS Investigator-Initiated Research Awards

The Investigator-Initiated Research Awards provide two grants of up to $50,000 each with a 12-month duration. These grants give investigators the opportunity to independently pursue focused projects that add to the evidence base in headache and migraine, from pilot studies to exploratory work that can set the stage for larger trials. Information on the 2025 cycle will be available in September 2025.

AHS Headache & Migraine Competitive Grant Program

The Headache & Migraine Competitive Grant Program, offered in collaboration with Pfizer, supports projects that focus on safety clinical effectiveness, rapidity of diagnosis/proper treatment, efficiency, patient centered care, and/or equity. Proposals core focus areas should cover non-headache specialty settings through improved diagnosis and management, collection and analysis of patient experience data, innovative solutions for standardized delivery of headache care, and/or expanded medical education in medical/allied health schools and residency training. Individual projects requesting up to $250,000 total over two years will be considered. Proposals with smaller budgets are strongly encouraged to submit.

  • Letter of Intent deadline: February 25, 2026
  • Invitations for full proposals: May 2026
  • Full proposal deadline: July 2026
  • Award notification: October 2026

Through these grant programs, AHS continues to foster discovery, support investigators, and advance care for individuals living with headache and migraine. Members are encouraged to review the opportunities and apply as new cycles open.
