How the APP Special Interest Group Supports the Growing Role of APPs in Headache Medicine

The Advanced Practice Providers Special Interest Group brings together advanced practice providers from across the AHS with a shared focus on connection, professional growth, and support within headache medicine. The co-chair, Laura Xanders, MS, FNP-BC, and former co-chair Annika Ehrlich, DNP, FNP-C, help guide the group’s efforts, creating opportunities for members to connect, learn from one another, and get more involved across AHS. Hear directly from Ms. Xanders and Dr. Ehrlich as they share the mission and priorities of the APP SIG:

Building Connection and Elevating APPs

At its core, the APP SIG focuses on fostering a strong sense of community among advanced practice providers. Both Ms. Xanders and Dr. Ehrlich are motivated by the support they received early in their careers, and want to provide the same for others. As Ms. Xanders explains, the group is committed to “supporting our APP colleagues, developing relationships amongst our peers, supporting them through research endeavors, education, and a sense of collegiality amongst our peers.”

This foundation of connection supports a broader effort to empower APPs within the American Headache Society and the field of headache medicine. The SIG helps members identify areas of interest, find ways to get involved, and contribute meaningfully across the organization.

Education remains a key priority for the group, with efforts focused on both APPs and primary care providers to expand knowledge of migraine and other headache disorders. Alongside education, the group also emphasizes advocacy and encourages members to take a more active role in shaping the field.

Growing Engagement Across AHS

The APP SIG continues to see strong and growing participation across the Society. Advanced practice providers now make up approximately 13% of AHS members, and engagement within the SIG continues to increase. Nearly 70 APPs attended the most recent APP SIG meeting in Scottsdale, which reflects the group's growing interest and involvement. These gatherings also provide space to better understand member needs and identify ways the SIG can continue to support them.

AHS Members are encouraged to engage with the APP SIG by attending meetings, contacting the co-chairs with feedback and ideas, and participating in ongoing and future initiatives. Interest in projects, both large and small, is welcomed as the group continues to grow its work. The SIG also emphasizes informal connections as an important part of engagement, whether through collaboration, shared learning, or simply connecting with peers across the Society.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on building pathways for APPs to grow within headache medicine and supporting the next generation of providers entering the field.
