Program Goals
The International Headache Academy is designed to inspire a long-term commitment to headache medicine in young neurologists and research scientists via an educational program focused on clinical and research aspects of the field.

The American Headache Society is dedicated to mentoring future leaders in headache medicine through both outreach and continued education.

The Eighth IHA will be held virtually on Friday, March 12 thru Saturday, March 13, 2021.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this meeting, attendees should be better able to:

  • Identify and describe the role of physiologic structures and systems involved in migraine, cluster headache, and related primary headache conditions
  • Diagnose patients presenting with primary and secondary head pain based on data from history-taking, knowledge of diagnostic criteria, and findings from epidemiologic studies
  • Develop evidence-based treatment plans involving medications/devices, complementary and alternative medicine, and/or behavioral techniques
  • Effectively communicate with headache patients and caregivers, both in eliciting information for history taking and providing information for education
  • Remember the steps involved in conducting a clinical trial and preparing the findings for publication
  • Explain how Headache Medicine can be a rewarding career choice and a viable practice model and evaluate opportunities to enter or advance in the field

EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT

The provision of quality CME is a primary mission of the American Headache Society®. The Society’s educational objectives are to continue to improve the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of physicians, psychologists, and other health professionals in the care of patients with head, neck, and orofacial pain by:

  • Providing a forum for presentation of free scientific communication on research and clinical practice
  • Providing educational symposia
  • Improving education in medical schools and residency programs
  • Identifying and developing new educational initiatives
  • Supporting educational programs directed to people with head, neck, and orofacial pain
  • Maintaining strict adherence to ACCME guidelines
  • Developing education activities and tools that are designed and then evaluated for their role in improving the learners’ competence, performance, and the overall quality and safety of the care they give to individuals suffering from head, neck, and orofacial pain

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

The American Headache Society® is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Headache Society® designates this Live Activity for a maximum of  8.00 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ . Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

All contributors who can affect American Headache Society CME content (including Leadership, Program Chairs, Program Committee Members, Moderators, Faculty, Speakers, Reviewers, Teachers, Authors, Medical Writers and Staff), in their respective roles, are required to disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest that could be viewed as a real or perceived conflict of interest. Thank you for your interest in the 2021 International Headache Academy. The application period has passed and selected candidates will be notified of acceptance in early 2021.

Candidate Criteria
Interested applicants must be a PGY 3-4 Resident, headache medicine fellow, or MD and/or PhD clinician/researcher currently enrolled or within 5 years of having completed their training in the US, Canada, or Latin America.

Application and Supporting Materials
Applicants must complete an online application form and provide the following supporting materials:

  • CV
  • Brief academic update (presentations delivered, abstracts published, manuscripts published or in press, book chapters published or in press, academic promotion, academic appointments, projects funded, or any other update)
  • Letter of support from Department Chair, Program Director, or AHS member
  • A demonstrated interest in headache medicine
  • Completion of statement of interest and financial disclosure form

Applications will be reviewed and rated according to the following:

  • Academic history and productivity
  • Field of study
  • Place of study
  • Quality of research to date (if any)
  • Potential for the applicant to provide leadership in headache medicine and make meaningful contributions to headache research and/or clinical care for many years

Through submission of an optional research proposal, selected applicants may be eligible to receive a $10,000 grant to fund their research project, and those selected will be invited to present at the 64th Annual Scientific Meeting in 2022.

Accepted applicants will also receive a one-year AHS Trainee membership if not already a member of AHS, or a one-year extension of their existing AHS Trainee membership and complimentary registration to the 64th Annual Scientific Meeting in 2022.
